Other affordable ways to get books

There are a number of options for obtaining books that aren't available through on the web or through the Empire State College Online Library's collection of ebooks.
  • Public Library
Your public library may not have an adequate supply of academic quality research materials unless you live in a big city. However, they do have reference collections and many have interlibrary loan services. Also, many public libraries offer a regional borrowing card that will allow you to borrow from collections in local college libraries.
  • SUNY Open Access Policy
If you live near a SUNY or NY community college library, take your Empire State College photo ID. It will allow you to borrow books from them. (If you incur fines or fees, a hold will be placed on your student account here until you pay them.)
  • Use Google's product search to find the cheapest copy of a book to buy
Type the title (in quotation marks) into the search box. The results list will display the prices, and will have links to the online stores that are selling the books.
  • Bookswim - like Netflix, but for books
You pay a monthly fee (starting at $30/month) based on how many books you want to have at a time. You submit the books that you want in a "queue" (with the ones you want first at the top) and they get mailed to you within 2 days. When you're done, you use their envelope to mail them back. There's a huge selection, including scholarly works and textbooks.
  • Nearby College Library
While they may not let you take out books, most college libraries allow members of the community to come in and use the books inside the building. Ask at the circulation desk and show them your Empire State College id; many let community members borrow under certain conditions.
